How to Build your Brand and Business – Listen to your Fans
Hi there!
I am so honored to be the first writer in this Guest Blogger series. Thanks Jaime!
So, just a little about me before we get started. My name is Cassey Ho, I am a Pilates Instructor, YouTube fitness guru (POP Pilates), healthy living blogger at Blogilates.com, and the owner/designer of oGorgeous yoga bags. Sounds like a lot, and it is, but I enjoy every single minute of it.
My roots are with YouTube – it all started after I posted 1 video as a “farewell” workout to my students when I headed out to the East Coast after college. Little did I know that I’d be making weekly workout videos just a couple years later. Today I have way over 50 workout videos targeting every possible muscle in your body and a rapidly growing fitness blog that pays the bills.
How’d I do it? I listened to my fans and gave them what they wanted.
This is how you build trust. Trust is the thing that keeps someone coming back to your site. And once you’ve got people coming back, you must then build community. You want the members who come to read your content to get to know each other too. I was able to do this through developing my Facebook fan page. Fans would come here to discuss how sore they were after one of my vids and then they would also ask questions. Fellow fans (who actually call themselves “POPsters”) would answer back and forth. Natural conversation brought life to the page. Quickly, my Facebook page became one of the most addictive aspects of my life…and theirs. I got to know my regulars very well. We even dubbed superstar POPsters as “Ambassadors” for their extra presence and contribution to daily content on the page. Everyone knew that they belonged in the community. It felt like an awesome group of friends who just loved getting fit and eating healthy together.
I didn’t really know what I was doing when all of this happened, but looking back, it seems that for the most part, I got it right. Remember to be the best expert you can be in your field and give your fans a reason to trust you. Give them great, reliable, and exciting content! Keep them coming back. And once you have a following, get them to make friends with each other. Then everyone’s happy!
Follow your senses and do what you’re passionate vlogging or blogging about. Your fans can tell the difference between you truly pouring your heart out versus you trying to be someone you’re not. You can’t please everyone. Just remember that the “right” fans will be “your” fans. Their love for you and your brand will help your business grow!
Good luck!
Cassey

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share!
Thanks Cassey – I’m still giddy that you accepted my request to write a post. You are one busy gal
What a wonderful post! I love how you said that your fans can tell the difference between you being you and you being someone else. As fitness professionals, I think sometimes we try to be the right trainer for everyone – and that’s just not the case. I want clients that want ME, so I need to show them ME! Thank you for posting!!
Kristy – you got the same message out of the post as I did – our clients are OUR clients for a reason. They connect with us because of who we are, not who we think we’re supposed to be!
Well written, Cassey! I can tell by your word choice and enthusiasm that helping others and working out are your life. I never thought about the concept of having my workouts be YouTube videos until reading your post. I’m a P90X nut, so DVD’s are my current way of “receiving” my workout instruction. As people move more toward having the internet on their televisions and more things are streamed like Netflix, I think we’ll see a major increase in workout instruction streaming. You’re at the forefront of this and will likely be successful doing something you love, and that is priceless!
Thanks for stopping by James. Of course, the question is, how many workout videos are you going to check out on YouTube tonight??
love your work chica! Great vibe and awesome post. Thanks for sharing your experience. Love your words about community, trust, expertness and authenticity…
I am expanding my work as a fitness coach and group ex super star … creating a program and will have a membership website in 2012. My question is how to you receive income from your blog?
take care
